Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition

Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition

After an incredible 50 years, the 911 is still one of the benchmark sports cars. Porsche made a special edition to celebrate its fabulous car. Unlike most special editions, this one is more than a new paint job (we are looking at you, Buggati). Porsche used the RWD Carrera S drivetrain and powertrain in the wider Carrera 4 body. Audi RS7

Audi RS7

Just a few pics of the RS7. Not much to say besides the fact that it looks great. The best looking four-door on the market gets 560hp from a 4.0 liter TT V8. 0-60 in less than 4 seconds and it is coming to the US, unlike the RS6 Avant. One unique aspect is the “Quattro” lettering in the grill. In the back there is a large diffuser and large oval exhaust tips. Just like the A7 and S7, it looks great. We will have to wait a while before we are able to see how it drives and how it stacks up against the M6 GC and CLS63 AMG.

2013 Maserati Quattroporte

2013 Maserati Quattroporte

The new Quattroporte looks MUCH better in these pictures, so we decided to share them. To read the opinion click here. In white, the the lines are much clearer, compared to the semi-matte-tan the car was released in. The car also looks better on the road than in the initial release. The powertrain options include a 3.0 liter V6 making 404 HP and a twin turbo 3.8 liter V8 making 523 HP. 0-60 is said to be 5.1 and 4.7 seconds for the V6 and V8 cars, respectively (those numbers are likely conservative, like all manufacture statistics). Another notable detail is an AWD option for the V6 model. Again, check out our opinion here and click on the jump for more pictures. Continue reading

2014 Maserati Quattroporte

2014 Maserati Quattroporte

The 2014 Maserati Quattroporte has been released in photos. Since it has just been released, there have not been any road tests or even live viewing, so there is not much to say besides opinions about the exterior. There is no doubt it is gorgeous, but I think Maserati could have done a little better. There is too much going on in the front. The front of the Granturismo looks similar to this, but it is less edgy and is less “busy-looking”. I loved the simple and classy look of the previous generation, and I think that the Quattroporte lost a little bit of that. The rear-end (not pictured) looks very nice, with the taillights heavily like the Granturismo’s (which is a good thing). The only thing I would change about the rear end is adding circular exhaust tips, instead of the squared-off ones this model has. That may seem like a lot of criticism, but overall the design looks very good, and is like none of its competitors. I also think the picture and color of the car do it justice. This seems like the kind of car that would look much better in a shiny color, as opposed to the matte/satin finish on the car pictured. Compared to its competitors, the Panamera, S-class, 7-series and A8, it definitely looks more exotic, and is far more attention grabbing (which can be good or bad). There is not much else to say until Maserati lets people drive them, but until then, this looks like a very exciting car.

Mercedes SL-Class

20121105-194755.jpg

One of the most well-rounded cars you can buy for 100k. It is both a luxury car and a GT car, it is a hardtop and a convertible, and it mixes speed with comfort. The Mercedes SL was recently updated with the model shown in the picture (2013 SL550). The SL is not a sports car by any means, but that is not what it is supposed to be. It is a true luxury GT. The cabin has both a gorgeous design, and is crafted from the finest materials. It is offered in the US as the SL550, SL63 AMG, SL600 and the SL65 AMG. The base SL is relatively quick, but the AMG models take it to a whole different level, especially the SL65. The SL65 AMG features a bi-turbo 6.0 liter V12 (bi-turbo is usually used as a synonym of twin-turbo, but that is not always the case). This V12 makes a thunderous 630hp. This is far more than a 458 or 997 Turbo, and will certainly get the car moving in a hurry. The SL65 AMG is still not a sports car though, it is a much more powerful and modified SL (think S550 vs S65 AMG). For the 100k luxury two-door market, this and the Granturismo barely edge out the M6, with the SL beating it in luxury and tech, while the Granturismo beats it in sportiness and engine sound.

PORSCHE PANAMERA

PORSCHE PANAMERA

Some people call it an ugly whale, but I do not see it. I just see the one of the most sporty sedans you can buy over 100k (GTS, Turbo, Turbo S). And do not forget that the variants under 100k (S, 4S, 4, S Hybrid, and the “base” one) will still kick most cars behind around a track.
